A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
