New research reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
